title pic Advice from Owain's Dad

We recently interviewed a dynamic kid named Owain Weinert , a 9 year old in the midst of fighting leukemia. Owain and his family participated in this year’s Seattle LIVE STRONG Challenge. After interviewing Owain we talked to his parents about what it is like to have a child in treatment and what advice they can offer other parents facing this battle.

These are the last physical sciences news headlines I’ll publish for the Intute (previously PSIgate) site. I’ve written for the organisation on a pretty much monthly basis for the last decade, first as PSIgate Spotlight, then as Hot Topics on Intute.

Rubies are wonderful! Most of the rubies that I get are an opaque colour and usually a dark red or a pinkish red. I wish that I could find more rubies in different sizes (especially larger sizes) and shapes, but I do jump on any opportunity to get some that look out of the ordinary

Even though June was Online Safety Month, there is an ongoing need to know what internet tools are being used in your home and for constant conversations about the risks and rewards of being online in order to keep your family safe. Last month I made a big leap when I decided to take a leave of absence from teaching.

title pic Mobility Equipment Buyer’s Guide

Diminished mobility, temporary or otherwise, can be a real show stopper when it comes to your independence.  The reality is, you don’t need to miss another minute of your life because of mobility issues.  Just ask any of the millions of wheelchair, mobility scooter, walker and cane users worldwide.  With the large range of mobility products available today, it would be a shame for anyone capable of using them to sit idly by. Let Allegro help you take control of your life, reduce your pain, improve your safety and lessen your dependence on others with a mobility device. Which Mobility Equipment is Best for You? Canes Canes – Canes are most often used to improve your balance as you walk, or to compensate for an injury or disability.  No longer whittled out of any old tree branch, walking canes have come a long way in their engineering, usability and comfort.     Your cane should be long enough that you don’t have to bend down to use it (save your back!).  You’ll want your elbow to bend at a comfortable angle.

title pic Muir Woods

I had more than one moment of doubt this morning concerning the wisdom of getting out of bed after about five hours’ sleep and driving across the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods National Monument. The first moment arrived at a little past 6 a.m., when I found the entrance to Muir Woods gated, locked and verboten . Ditto for the overflow lot, and none of the park’s signs indicated an opening time

title pic If I were a teenage boy…

I’d mow the lawn and complete my summer homework packets or spend all of my hard earned allowance to get my hands on a Limited Edition PSP with Rock Band Unplugged. Me and my band would skip the Quickplay and Training and go right to Tour. I wouldn’t choose anything as uncool as Livin’ on a Prayer or anything else from the 80s.

title pic Sony PSP Combines on the Go Reading & Gaming for Summer Fun

Our PSP came preloaded with three following mini (or lite) games that were selected due to age appropriateness for our kids (ages 4 and 6): Supermarket Mania – A game where we have to use the joystick controls to race around the store and keep it stocked with the items our customers want. Pile Up Bakery – A 1 or 2 player game that is really testing my ability to use our PSP because of my inability to pile up sweets as they drop on to the assembly line. Tetris – A classic that is so different than the version I used to play on my college computer back in the day! What additional mini games do you think I should add to my PSP that our 4 and 6 year old would enjoy?

title pic Toys and games for a rainy day

“Rain, rain, go away, come again another day!” Being stuck inside because of wet winter weather is a challenge for active, curious kids. While computer games, the Wii and DVDs are a good standby on a rainy day, sometimes they are more trouble than they are worth, especially when they cause sibling squabbles and petty arguments. So what can you do this winter to keep your kids engaged and entertained when they can’t go outside?
