Race Across America
Competing in this year’s Race Across America was an experience that, for me, involved just about every conceivable human emotion and condition: Joy and sadness; comfort and pain; periods of strength and endurance, punctuated by moments of abject exhaustion when I could not imagine turning the pedals one more time. Race Across America (RAAM) is a 3,000 mile bicycle race from California to Maryland.

Extraterrestrial molecules and the plausibility of life on earth
Latest scientific news with a spectroscopic angle Extraterrestrial molecules – An astronomical infrared study reveals one of the most complex organic molecules yet found in the interstellar medium – anthracene – offering possible new clues to the way the building blocks of life might have emerged. Wrinkles improve spectra – Polydimethylsiloxane can be used to produce wrinkles on a glass surface to pattern lines of gold which are twice as effective as conventional SERS substrates, according to German and Spanish researchers. Chemical communications – A new system for non-electronic communication that can transmit alphanumeric information encoded as pulses of light, over intervals of hours, without needing electricity and so remaining operational even without batteries in remote, hazardous or poor locations.

Why all Kids Need Creative Toys
With the abundance of computer games and television distractions and toys with little room for creative engagement for children, it is important to give their lives a little balance by providing them with toys that nurture and develop their creative side. Creativity is not limited to the arts and ‘creative activities’ such as music and visual arts

Going vegan – it can sound like a scary choice, even to those who have already chosen to follow a vegetarian diet. However, the short and long-term health benefits can be worth giving up old favorites such as scrambled eggs

Review of the Seiko SBQJ015 Perpetual Calendar GMT
When I realized that most of my collection had shifted toward divers and sports watches, I started to keep an eye out for something a little more elegant — something that might be slightly more at home with dress shirt than a 15mm high piece of military equipment or a plastic digital G-Shock.

Isn’t It Charming? Aquamarines, rubies, and Swarovski Crystals
I am a great fan of charm bracelets . I personally prefer them in gold with weighty charms, some encrusted with gemstones; they are especially endearing when the charms have been collected over a long period of time and have a special or sentimental value for the wearer. The charm bracelet above is gold and has gemstones, but compared to those sentimental trinkets, it was put together rather quickly.

Leaving on a Jet Plane with Our Sony PSP
The kids and I are getting ready to embark on a cross country flight to visit my parents in California. Little Miss Techie and Captain Computer are pretty savvy travelers and have racked up a fair amount of miles on their frequent flier cards in their short lifetimes but this trip will be a little different since it is our first solo flight.

The Chalkbot makes it easy for you to be part of the Tour – sending your message of hope and inspiration to the 28 million people around the world fighting cancer today. Chalkbot follows the great cycling tradition of writing inspirational messages along the course for riders to see.

KEEPER, by Kathi Appelt
KEEPER by Kathi Appelt illus. by August Hall (Atheneum) If I told you exactly what I liked best about this book, I’d spoil it for you in at least three different ways. Instead, I will be cagey, brief, and metaphorical — probably maddeningly so: If The Underneath was a ballad, Keeper is a pot of gumbo.
