Books unmasked
Happy Halloween! Here’s a puzzle for you — how many of these books can you identify without their costumes, er, dust jackets? Some should be easy, others maybe not so much: (click the image to make it bigger) Other nifty undercover embellishments, which didn’t make the puzzle matrix for obvious reasons: Some cover decorations, like those on Number the Stars , Beauty , The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus , Diamond Willow , and The Castle in the Attic are embossed without foil or color, and don’t photograph worth a darn. Check ‘em out! And next time you’ve got your hands on a nice new hardcover, don’t be too shy to peep under its knickers.

At opening of Florida solar-energy facility, President Obama focuses on smart grid and renewable energy
On Tuesday, President Barack Obama promoted the smart grid and renewable energy at the opening of Florida Power & Light's DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center (shown). The facility consists of more than 90,500 solar panels, making it the largest solar-photovoltaic plant in the country and, according to FPL, its annual estimated generation is about 42,000 megawatt hours. The president outlined how the federal government is making a $3.4 billion investment from Recovery Act funds to modernize the country's electric grid with a goal of creating a more-reliable, more-efficient system.

Detroit house to be turned into giant ice cube
You might have heard about or even had to deal with ice dams, those frozen build-ups around the eaves of a home that can damage roofing and siding during winter (see illustration). In Detroit, two artists are taking the concept of the ice dam to the extreme, and perhaps that's appropriate in a city known as Hockeytown, USA. Architectural photographer Gregory Holm and architect Matthew Radune plan to encase one of Detroit's thousands of abandoned homes in ice this winter, according to this Associated Press report

Shale gas holds promise, but drilling for it is controversial
As we covered in Buzzword: Shale gas , this natural gas contained within fine-grained, sedimentary rock is a topic of much interest for the energy industry. There are vast reserves of shale gas nationwide, and energy companies are working hard and fast to tap these natural-gas sources through what's called water fracturing, also known as hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking.

WorldVitalRecords Database in Review: Sims Index
Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia (http://www.worldvitalrecords.com/indexinfo.aspx?ix=gpc0806317140_simsindex) Land records comprise one of the most important sources for early American genealogical research, since sometimes they are the only records that can place an individual in a particular place at a particular time. For this reason Sims Index to Land Grants in West Virginia is an essential resource for anyone researching their early Virginia/West Virginia ancestors. A comprehensive guide to pre-1900 land records in West Virginia (which until 1863 was part of the Commonwealth of Virginia), Sims Index lists land grants that were made by Lord Fairfax prior to the creation of the Virginia Land Office in 1779, as well as those issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia for land now located in West Virginia, and by the State of West Virginia under its first Constitution.

Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking by Michael Clerizo
A few months ago, I got an e-mail from Michael Clerizo, telling me that he had written a book called ‘Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking’. I hooked him up with Ernie Romers of WatchUseek to see if there was something possible with regards to the watch event WATCH2009 in Maastricht (on the 14th and 15th of November). Two weeks ago, I received the Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking book by Michael

HM2.2 “Black Box” by MB&F and Alain Silberstein
Friend of the show, Maximilian Büsser, just introduced the HM2.2 ‘Black Box’. A redesign of the famous Horological Machine No.2 that he did together with watch design icon Alain Silberstein . Maximilian Büsser wrote in his e-mail that “In fact my first encounter with an Alain Silberstein watch dates back to my student years over 20 years ago: I was driving down a German Autobahn and overtook a BMW Z1 with it’s doors down and the driver wearing first world war pilot jacket, goggles and leather helmet – and a Silberstein Krono on his wrist

Mini Chocolate Pumpkin Tarts
Conspicuous from the new header I bought and clicked the season’s first pumpkins. The markets are filling with these gorgeous antioxidant rich fruit, how could I not pick one?. I ignored them in the past but not anymore. This is just my second year of cooking with pumpkins and I have lot of recipes to try with them ,so expect to see some of my favorite pumpkin dishes this season. I find the cutting part particularly challenging, while some smaller variety can cut through with sharp knife, perhaps I did not have the muscle power for this particular pie pumpkin I also needed a hammer to pierce the knife in

Cocoa Dark Chocolate Macaroons…..with no feet?
Despite the missing “feet”(the ruffled bottoms) these Classic French Macaroons tasted delectable, were still chewy and brittle in texture.Over half a dozen attempts,I couldn’t figure out the reason why the bottoms did not develop each time as it were supposed to, in spite of taking all the care and caution as recommended by the expert bakers.May be its just a matter of practice, hopefully I’ll have good macaroon days in the future. I tried flavoring them with saffron, instant coffee but my favorite has to be the cocoa. There is a subtle difference between cocoa and chocolate .I use 100 % cocoa for the sandwiches and the filling is just Dark chocolate. The 2009 October Daring Bakers’ challenge was brought to us by Ami S.

Inside Consumer Reports Test Labs: Which vacuums make pet-hair cleanup less of a nightmare?
The menacing-looking device in the photo (right) isn't a prop from Saw VI or some gruesome Halloween slasher film, though it could play a part in Nightmare in Yonkers: Pet-Hair Perils . The photo is actually a shot of John McAloon, a project leader in our Technical department, holding a new device he and his team created to embed pet hair into the carpeting we use for vacuum testing. About three years ago, we instituted pet-hair testing, having recognized that so many readers were looking for the best vacuums to deal with their dogs' and cats' (furry) droppings.

Chills or Cheer: How do you do Halloween?
It’s Halloween again and most communities are split between those thrilled by the ghostly fear that chills the skin and those who battle hard against the dark, filling the night with the glow of candlelight, sweet treats and happy times. The BlogCatalog community is no different. While many of us are sitting at our cozy keyboards, like Amanda at Change.Org, writing 101 Things to Be for Halloween Other than a Pimp, or like the Crunchy Domestic Goddess, penning 10 Simple Ways to Green your Halloween , others are busy scaring the tightie whities off of everyone they can

Once in a Blue Moon- Connect with Author Eileen Goudge on Facebook and Twitter!
Believe it or not, I don’t actually spend all of my time online. I do spend a fair amount of it reading and commenting on the many blogs in my reader (comments are currency in the blog world!) but I also love quiet moments when I actually get to sit down and read a good book or go through my stack of magazines. As you can imagine, those moments are few and far between and I have a whole list of books that I want to read.

Should I Cut My Hair? You Decide
While I am not endowed with her other attributes, I do have about the same hair (texture, color, curliness) as Sophia Loren. A few months ago, I was looking at images of her and was taken by a short cut she had, the photo of which I sent to my hair-cutter, saying, I might want this cut when I go to Panama in January, as I will not be taking the blow-dryer (what my daughter calls my ” ghetto hairdryer ,” to which I have essentially been harnessed since age thirteen because it nicely half-pulls out the curls)

Vintage Consumer Reports: Steam irons didn’t impress in October 1951
“The introduction of the first home steam-electric iron a few years ago was greeted with considerable fanfare, and the fervent hope, among iron-tired housewives that here, at last, was a good answer to their ironing problems.” —Consumer Reports, October 1951 Those first-generation steam irons didn't impress. Manufacturers made bold claims, but the irons ran out of steam and clothes still had to be dampened before ironing, according to our 1951 test results. Even worse, for the October 1951 report, nine of 11 steam irons were judged Not Acceptable, eight presented burn or scald hazards, and the soleplate melted and the thermostat failed on the Silex (shown)

Don’t be such a scientist!
Don’t be such a scientist! It’s the kind of thing I’d expect my sister to say to my face if I’ve gone off on one of my lecture mode conversations about some great discovery, or something some of my artier friends might whisper about me behind my back. Sometimes it’s a personal wish…but then I think of everything those who choose to stifle their curiosity about the world around them miss out on: A rainbow is just as beautiful woven or unravelled, understanding the biochemistry of nectar or photosynthesis doesn’t make a rose smell any less sweet, and the beauty of a clear, night sky is all the more awesome (literally) when you’ve got a vague grasp of its true depths. Anyway, I suspect that’s what Randy Olson is getting at in his book Don’t be such a scientist .
