title pic Today: Sapphires and Cameo Necklaces

It is already September, and that means that the Cluny Grey Fall Collection comes out this coming week! September also means that the sapphire is the gemstone of the month. So for those of you looking for birthstone jewelry, or those who just love sapphires, above is a sapphire bracelet made with sapphires and sterling silver. And yes, even the golden yellow gemstones that you see is a sapphire as well! The sterling silver filigree and flowers makes this unique bracelet pretty and feminine.

It is nearing the end of summer; there were so many things that I wanted to do while the summer sun shone brightly that I may not be able to accomplish in the few summer days left, but I relish the change of seasons, especially the change from summer to fall. I’ve been working on my Fall Collection of jewelry frantically incorporating the season’s colours into new looks that will complement Fall clothing.

title pic Jewelry and Cats!

The title reflects the state of my life at the moment: jewelry and cats! Cluny and Cuervo are adapting to life in the city; I had almost forgotten what high-maintenance cats they are! (I wouldn’t have it any other way). Cuervo will come and sit on the floor and look up at me when I’m working; he can do this for 15 minutes without moving. If I talk to him briefly without getting up, he will start talking to me – and he’s anything but brief.

title pic The Long Road Home

It’s been a very, very busy week, and I’m hoping to catch up on everything in all my lives, work, personal, domestic…. I drove over 800 miles to Arkansas without stopping for the night by myself and then back here to Virginia with my husband (who did the driving this time).

Hello from Arkansas! After a grueling drive here, I’m finally relaxed and rested and dreading the drive back. Of course, I drove so that my husband and I could drive our two cats, Cluny and Cuervo, back with us.

title pic Something Old, Something New

And in this case, the old is what’s new! I’m starting a new, small line of antique-style jewelry that will include Victorian and Georgian styles along with the occasional Edwardian and Art Deco piece.

title pic Isn’t It Charming? Aquamarines, rubies, and Swarovski Crystals

I am a great fan of charm bracelets . I personally prefer them in gold with weighty charms, some encrusted with gemstones; they are especially endearing when the charms have been collected over a long period of time and have a special or sentimental value for the wearer. The charm bracelet above is gold and has gemstones, but compared to those sentimental trinkets, it was put together rather quickly.

title pic Ruby: The July Birthstone

Rubies are wonderful! Most of the rubies that I get are an opaque colour and usually a dark red or a pinkish red. I wish that I could find more rubies in different sizes (especially larger sizes) and shapes, but I do jump on any opportunity to get some that look out of the ordinary

title pic The First Day of Summer!

Finally, the first day of summer! It’s a busy time of year especially at Cluny Grey. As I sit and make jewelry, I can’t help but think how each piece will look with a sundress or tanned skin or a halter-top. Although jewelry really isn’t “summer” or “winter” the way clothes are, certain materials, such as coral, lend themselves to a summery, even beachy feeling.

title pic How Does Your Garden Grow?

I haven’t been to my house in Arkansas this May; instead, I’ve stayed in the city with my baby grand-daughter. I have missed the flowers of Arkansas although I really prefer the city

title pic The Emerald Days of May

I love May, the month of my birthday, for its flowers, green leafy beginnings shooting from the ground, and for the life that suddenly moves from inside stuffy houses to the fresh and fragrant outdoors. I always think of it as the month of emeralds, and the emerald is truly an appropriate birthstone for May. I love working with emeralds and I especially like to combine them with other gemstones

title pic Update on Letting Customers “Design Their Own Jewelry”

A couple of years ago I wrote about the trend of offering customers some “design your own jewelry” options. People LOVE having the opportunity to “create” or personalize their own items from a set of simple choices, and it can be a huge selling point. (However, I recommend limiting each option to a maximum of about 6

Kind of a dumb question, but I need to know what people use to secure their necklaces to cards? I have seen little pieces of white wire used to keep necklaces

title pic For Graduation: The Colours of Spring and Summer

More bracelets in the colours of Spring! The jade bracelet above celebrates the colour of the season – turquoise! Faceted rectangles of turquoise jade are complemented by purple and pink jade, including a carved pink jade tulip and also spring green carved flowers in jade. The second strand is a sterling silver chain with dangles of turquoise jade. It’s the perfect Spring/Summer bracelet with all those colours that we traditionally associate with the two seasons.

title pic Gemstones and Abalone with a Necklace or Two

March is almost over, and it’s cherry blossom time. For me, this means several different things: my darling grand-daughter will be one year old, Washington will be inundated with tourists (and traffic) hoping to find the perfect confluence of blossoms, warm weather and sunlight to view what is truly one of Nature’s lovely sights, and I am a month closer to a trip to Africa

I have a terrible case of Spring Fever, made all the worse by allergies and being too busy to do almost anything other than work (and the allergies seem to make me sleepy – whatever I do I can’t seem to get enough sleep lately!). So those are my excuses for not posting for such a long time and for the brief post today
