Drug testing, solar fullerenes, chemicalization
These are my recent science picks, including my latest contributions to spectroscopyNOW.com Drug testing – A simple analytical approach to identifying drugs of abuse would be a boon to forensic scientists and law enforcement agencies. A collaboration between researchers in the US and Europe demonstrates how an assessment of different methods using chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry reveals that multivariate selectivity can take into account the degree of resolution between nominally unresolved peaks due to the presence of various drugs in a forensic sample and so allow quicker identification. Solar fullerenes – Sheffield's David Lidzey working with Athene Donald of the University of Cambridge and experts from Cardiff University and Nick Terrill at the Diamond Light Source, the UK's synchrotron facility in Didcot, have investigated the structure of solar cell materials to help them improve photovoltaic efficiencies

Steamboat Ride for Yellow
It was 1999 when I witnessed my first mountain bike race in my new found hometown of Steamboat Springs, CO. I had just moved here from Dallas via Austin and I was excited to see a fellow Texan race in the Rockies.

My Long Run
I am currently on a solo run of 1002 miles in a calendar month. The distance is of course based on the date of Lance’s diagnosis, and is in memory of my Dad who died of Cancer of the esophagus five years ago in September. To complete the event I will need to cover an average of over 32 miles per day and as I type this I am 12 days into the challenge and have covered 401 miles

Spotted: President Obama Attending a Washington Mystics Game (& WNBA Ticket Discount)
Just 3 days after I heard President Obama speak at the National Urban League’s Centennial Convention , I happened to share the same air space (as a Twitter friend pointed out!) with him again at a Washington Mystics game! I have to admit that while the action on the floor was highly exciting, I couldn’t help watching The President embrace his role as a dad a mere 12 rows in front of us.

Family, Attitude, Faith, Courage, Strength
My life has been all about those words as they appear on my team’s LIVE STRONG Challenge jersey logo. Together, these words intertwine and form the foundation of my life for the last two-and-a-half-years, and they are the reason why I expanded my involvement in the LIVE STRONG Challenge from participant to team captain. I was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer in January of 2008—just a week before my twin daughters’ first birthdays.

Dave Nagel, a grassroots fundraiser and the brother of Steve Nagel (an extraordinary fundraiser in his own right), created a grassroots, community-based mountain bike event benefiting LIVE STRONG and Steamboat cancer initiatives. Sony PSP Offers Great Content for Every Member of the Family
As part of the PSP Family Fun campaign, Sony armed me with a Special Edition PSP 3000 with Rock Band , loaded some age appropriate content for my kids, and sent me both the high tech ( Flip Camcorder ) and low tech ( Moleskine ) for me to document our use of our PSP throughout the summer. I have to admit that I wasn’t sure how much I would use the PSP when it first arrived because I don’t consider myself a gamer but fast forward a few months and I’ve found the PSP to be a powerful device that isn’t just for gaming and offers something for every member of the family. My husband is addicted to perfecting his Rock Band skills while jamming to 80s songs that conjure up a host of memories and 6 year old Little Miss Techie gets her comic fix thanks to the free downloadable DC Comics
