 Seventh Generation strikes deal with the devil, er, Walmart

The temperature must be dropping in Hades—at least according to the forecasting of Seventh Generation co-founder Jeffrey Hollender. For years, Hollender maintained that “hell would freeze over” before his company’s eco-friendly products would be sold in Walmart. The time is nigh, according to the Wall Street Journal , which reports that Seventh Generation laundry detergent, dish soap, all-purpose sprays, and disinfectant wipes will be sold in about 1,500 Walmart stores starting next month.

The Department of Energy wants to friend you on Facebook , send you tweets , and share photos and videos on Flickr and YouTube . Secretary Steven Chu has seen the light and is spreading DOE’s message on, you guessed it, a new Energy blog . “While the act of starting a blog is hardly novel, it is a first for us and part of our commitment to achieving the level of transparency, engagement, and accessibility that you should expect from your government,” he wrote in the first post

 Adding ALT Tags to Images

After posting about meeting with the Yahoo Accessibility Lab , all of my posts going forward will include ALT tags for images. ALT tags are included with an images HTML to ensure those who use screen readers due to visual impairment will know what images are included on a web page.  In the Air with our Sony PSP!

From long security lines, cancelled flights, weather delays, to antsy children, traveling can be quite trying but luckily our flight was a dream! Our carry-ons were packed full of gadgets and snacks to keep us entertained and well fed for the cross country flight. As you can see, the PSP was a huge hit! Little Miss Techie continues to love the digital comics and we are currently searching for games that are not only appropriate for almost 4 year old Captain Computer, but also ones that are easy for his little hands to operate. Even though our kids didn’t exhaust the current content, I know that I’ll have some new games and comics loaded on to our PSP for our return flight or perhaps they can watch the Tooth Fairy since we didn’t even have time to start it during our trip! And that’s a good thing! If you know of any easy to operate games for our soon-to-be 4 year old, feel free to leave a comment!  Tragic Tale of Sexting at Yahoo MotherBoard Summit Serves as Chilling Reminder of Importance of Internet Safety

The Yahoo MotherBoard Summit agenda was jam packed with tons of information but I was most interested in the Online Safety Roundtable featuring Catherine Teitelbaum, Policy Director for Yahoo Safely and Anne Toth who serves as the Vice President and Head of Privacy for Yahoo. After a welcome, Catherine Teitelbaum showed us a video featuring a local mother and father remembering their beautiful, smart, and talented teenage daughter who took her life because of a topless photo that she sent as a sext to a boy in her high school. The boy forwarded the photo to one friend and the friend sent it to another friend and on and on and on.

Just when homeowners have become fed up with high temperatures and scorched lawns, a report from the National Resources Defense Council (PDF) says that more than 1,100 counties—or more than one-third of those in the contiguous 48 states—will face higher risks of water shortages by mid-century. Of those, 400 counties in 14 states are of particular concern. The cause, says the NRDC, is global warming.

 Access Ramps – Choosing the Right Length

Choosing the right length  access ramp is pretty easy once you have the formulas.  All you need is a tape measure, a calculator or the handy Ramp Slope Chart (see below) and a keen understanding of what you’re trying to accomplish and you’ll be able to buy a ramp with the right amount of incline.  You don’t want the ramp to be too steep, right?  In fact, the length of the ramp is at least as critical as the width when it comes to safety, but takes some thought and a little planning.  Once you have the length calculated, you can choose the proper width and type of ramp – depending on how and where it will be used.  What a relief to know you will be able to get your mobility scooter into the van; assist an elderly or disabled person up the porch steps; or roll your wheelchair down a terraced walkway with the greatest of ease and safety. Our buddies at Prairie View Industries ( PVI Ramps ) shared their ramp slope formulas, ramp slope chart and measurement instructions so we could help you calculate your optimal ramp length.   Thanks PVI! How Long Should My Ramp Be? To determine your ramp length you first need to determine the rise .  The rise is the vertical measurement between the ground and where the top of the ramp is going to sit.  Note: If your rise is more than 24″ (2 feet) please contact a local dealer about a modular system.
