An incandescent bulb uses too much energy and much of it is converted to heat. But on the bright side, it costs 50 cents—not bad for a product that allows you to read, work, or dance into the night and lasts 1,000 hours. Compact fluorescent lights are typically about four times more efficient than incandescent bulbs and some last 10 times longer, according to our tests .
