Ripples in History
I recently finished Victor Davis Hanson’s Ripples of Battle (Doubleday, 2003), with the give-it-all-away subtitle How wars of the past still determine how we fight, how we live, and how we think . Generalizing a bit, not just wars but many major events and some small, unnoticed ones send ripples into the future, silently influencing future generations. Could the present, our present, have turned out differently?

Trend Report: Sunglasses
By Alison Singh Gee for The Style Glossy The perfect pair of sunglasses can totally rock your summer. It’s the one accessory that instantly communicates style, mystery and even a great sense of humor or a certain seriousness. Take, for example, Lindsay Lohan’s eyeglass choice for a recent court appearance — an elegant modernized cat eye (Dior’s Bagatelle) that suggested Catherine Deneuve respectability rather than Paris Hilton frivolity

When Everyone Else Lowers Prices, Chanel Raises Them
Racked NY is reporting that prices for Chanel bags and shoes have officially gone up between 20% and 30%. According to the post, that means that the bag you were planning on casually purchasing for $2600 is now going to cost $3400, and the shoes you wanted went from $585 to $685 or even $895 (feel free to do the math on other items).

The Best Recap of ‘The View’ Ever
There was a time, long ago, when I actually liked “The View.” It was around the time that the show aired, and it was kind of a new concept — a show hosted entirely by women, with the premise of airing women’s points of views on the pressing issues of the day. Well, that lasted for about a second, and then — as loathe as I am to say this, because my inner feminist rails against the phrase — the show deteriorated rapidly into a bunch of clucking hens, and since then, it’s become impossible to watch. No one ever gets to complete a sentence, everyone interrupts each other, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a goddamn moron

Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana Loves Londoners
Stefano Gabbana, half of the top ten fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana recently told the Evening Standard that they chose to outfit English soccer club Chelsea FC because they think of London as one of the most stylish cities in the world. The Milan-based Gabbana said, “The men are so stylish – when the occasion came to work with Chelsea, we had to take it.” The pairing of fashion designers with athletes has become a trend in the UK fashion industry recently, with Stella McCartney being tasked with outfitting UK-based Olympians for the upcoming 2012 Games

Justin Timberlake Designs, Directs
In the latest celeb news, Justin Timberlake is branching out from his usual musical and acting gigs in order to design clothing and direct an ad for tequila. Timberlake, who has long been noticed by the fashion industry for his great celebrity fashion style will be selling his William Rast clothing line at chain retailer Target starting in December. Skin From More Than 750 Bodies Discovered in Holland
Boxes containing the remains of more than 750 raccoon dogs were found in a Netherlands meadow last week. The pelts were missing the strip of fur down the center of the animals’ backs, a tell-tale sign that the animals were likely skinned to make fur collars and cuffs. Although there are no known raccoon dog fur farms in the Netherlands, thousands of these animals are bred and skinned on fur farms in China and their pelts are shipped all over the world for sale

5 Things Not to Do At a Crime Scene
Earlier today, Gothamist posted a YouTube video in which a drunk-ish woman in Brooklyn leaves a bar, crosses into the scene of a murder, then says something loudly into her phone that could easily be construed as racist. Meanwhile, you can hear the two amateur filmmakers talking shit about her and what she said (because two guys filming some chick without her consent are people who should definitely be judging other people’s actions). Both the filmer and the filmee have laid out some good basics for us about bad behavior at a crime scene — being racist (maybe), filming people without their knowledge, and wandering into the scene in the first place.

By Georges! NHL Star Officially Goes Green
Former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque may be retired, but don’t call him a snowbird (he’s 33—I don’t think he meets the age requirement). Not only is his second vegan restaurant scheduled to open on August 5, he’s also getting fired up to use his new role as deputy leader of Canada’s Green Party to promote the many pluses of a humane, healthy, environmentally friendly vegan diet

How much would you pay for a light bulb?
An incandescent bulb uses too much energy and much of it is converted to heat. But on the bright side, it costs 50 cents—not bad for a product that allows you to read, work, or dance into the night and lasts 1,000 hours. Compact fluorescent lights are typically about four times more efficient than incandescent bulbs and some last 10 times longer, according to our tests .

Lady Gaga Thinks Her Pu@*y Leaks Creativity
In the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair , Lady Gaga reveals her curious fears about the power of her pussy: “Lady Gaga tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Lisa Robinson that she tries to avoid having sex because she is afraid of depleting her creative energy—’I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they’re going to take my creativity from me through my vagina.’” It’s an interesting thought, your creativity — or anything intangible, really — leaking it’s way out of your body through your vagina. But my question is, what happens when other, more necessary items find their way into her honey pot? When she takes out a tampon, does she then flush her creativity down the toilet

Strawberry balsamic cupcakes with strawberry and raspberry vodka frosting!
I’m working on a larger strawberry cupcake post, but these cupcakes by The Inky Kitchen (go there for the recipe and more photos) clearly deserve their own post! She writes: As I spoke about these cupcakes at work today I got a few funny looks when people heard strawberries and vinegar in the same sentence, but believe me this is a magical combo. The Italians have been doing it for ages and we all know they don’t tend to get food wrong.

Highbrow cupcakes: Cupcakes and cocktails at London’s Mayfair Hotel
JustLuxe reports on London’s posh Mayfair Hotel (prices start from £20pp) offering Cupcakes and Cocktails: We ‘um’ and ‘ah’ as we pass the drinks around to try them all – as we do so, our waitress arrives with a selection of the brightest coloured cupcakes I’ve ever seen. We delve in, trying, between mouthfuls, to decide which of these sugary works of art is our favourites. I love the tangy lemon curd, but the others each decide they prefer either the divine chocolate, the creamy vanilla or the moreish coconut and strawberry
